My Closet Confessions: Post-Baby Weight Transition

My closet was once my Happy Place. It was full of color, perfectly pressed pants, handbags of every shape and size and clothes that fit.

I’ve slowly let go of my Happy Place as the years have passed– and as the number of children in the house multiply. My wardrobe has become monotone, I have more yoga pants than I care to admit, my “handbags” are actually diaper bags and my clothes do not fit.

I wear the same “uniform” every day but that’s partly because I refuse to buy bigger sizes. I want to lose the baby weight and get back into my pre-baby clothing… or at least some of it (I am realistic). I’m not that mom that wears her skinny jeans a week after she has a baby and? I never will be. I’ve come to peace with my genetics. Even though I don’t agree with it.
Anyway.
My toddler has weaned. He is no longer breastfeeding and I am starting to lose the extra 10-15 pounds that my body stores until its no longer producing milk. Yeah, I’m not that mom that loses all the baby weight while nursing either. Curse you genetics. I am at peace.

We (I say we… like you are doing this with me)… I am officially on my way to fitting into (most of) my pre-baby clothes. (How’s that for positive thinking?) I am officially in Transition Mode going from Post-Baby Body Blues to I’m Going To Fit In My Skinny Jeans By My 30th Birthday, Or Else.

To start the process, I’ve decided to do a little Closet Confession. You know, a way to keep things in check, retire some old things, confess (and replace) my love for all things comfy and stretchy (ahem. yoga pants.) and get back to my Happy Place. Happy Place = Happy Mommy = Happy Family.

Here we I go.

What I’ve Had the Longest

I’ve had these pants for 9 years. Yes, nine. I bought them at a high-end maternity boutique while pregnant with my first son. They were my go-to pants. They are were beyond comfortable, stylish (for yoga pants), not too high or tight on my growing belly and had a perfect fit. Yes, yoga pants can have a bad fit. Best $60 I’ve ever spent- they’ve cost me a little more than $6.00 per year with 3 pregnancies and everything in between. Kudos to Dress Maternity for making such durable yoga pants. Too bad they’re not around anymore.

What I “Stole”

Other than snatching a toy off a rack while sitting in a grocery cart (at the age of 2), I’ve never stolen a thing in my adult life. I have, however, borrowed… um, acquired this hat from my husband. I spotted it in his closet years ago and it has been mine ever since. This is the hat you will see me in when I haven’t washed my hair. Sometimes I get a little crazy and add a Pleated Poppy Posy Pin on one side.

What I Collect

Shoes… glorious shoes! In the past 4 years, I can count on one and a half hands how many times I’ve worn heals yet I refuse to get rid of them– even the ones that are a little tighter now that my feet have grown a half size since birthing three babies. I hold on to hope that my feet will find the willpower to transition to a smaller size with the rest of me and once again enjoy their fancies. Or I’ll look into shoe stretching.

Most Sentimental Item

My T-Bags shirt. My husband (then boyfriend) went shopping for my birthday. Yes, shopping. And? The boy can shop! Well, he can’t shop but he has great taste and knows what I like (and what I look good in). It’s also one of the only colorful things in my closet at the moment.

THE Staple For Transition

Two words: Yummie Tummie. I have the Original Tank in Nude and I basically wear it every day. I would wear it every single day if it didn’t have to be washed. Oh, and I don’t wear it with most of my tank tops because the straps show (guess I’ll have to get a Strappy Tank, too!) Actually, if my Original Tank was white or black I’d definitely wear it under tank tops and not worry about the straps showing cause then it would have that layered look. In fact, Yummie Tummie is made to have the layered look, I would just rather layer with a colored tank and not something that looks undergarment-ish.
I do like the Original Tank style because it allows you to wear your bra, and wear it comfortably, without your bra straps showing.
There are three parts to each tank; the top and bottom are like any other shirt (material wise- 94% cotton and 6% elastine for a little stretch) and then the middle body panel is where the magic happens. The middle body panel is 82% polyester and it doesn’t pinch or rub. I found that when I wear leggings or ahem, yoga pants, it’s best that I tuck the bottom of the tank in my pants so that the tank doesn’t ride up. When I wear my Yummie Tummie with Jeans or any other bottoms, I don’t have a problem with ridding up at all. It’s machine washable and dryable, which is a must in this house.
According to the website,

The Yummie Tummie Original Tank comfortably smoothes away unsightly lumps and bumps, while adding style to your wardrobe! An everyday layering basic, your most essential Tank now comes with a one-of-a-kind design that slims and smoothes your middle!

and I can attest to that. (I can’t believe I’m doing this) but look! Here is a picture of me, today… day one of the transition, in my trusty yoga pants and blue tank top aka “the uniform”.

(I call those my shelf-hips aka the perfect place to hold my small kids)

So, now do you see why I wear it all the time?

My days are consumed with kids and I’m constantly putting my needs last (I know, bad mommy! but, it’s the truth). I like to feel and look good… Who doesn’t? It’s been 4+ years of back-to-back pregnancies and nursing and I’m ready to start my transition.

What are YOUR Closet Confessions?

Disclosure: Yummie Tummie sent me an Original Tank to test and review. I was not paid to write my sentiments about Yummie Tummie and my opinions are my own.
